Learn why retired technology becomes a business problem, how a controlled disposition process works, and how to explain Galide’s role in creating a secure, documented, value-recovering next step.

01 · Learn

ITAD is a controlled business process

IT asset disposition covers the decisions and work required when technology leaves active use. The goal is not simply to remove equipment—it is to produce an approved, traceable outcome.

Value

Devices lose resale potential while they sit. Timing, model, age, condition, configuration, and market demand affect recoverability.

Risk

Retired hardware may still contain data, credentials, management controls, or unclear ownership. Reset is not the same as verified sanitization.

Work

Collection, packaging, shipping, inventory, exceptions, and remote returns create operational burden when no one owns the workflow.

Proof

Stakeholders need serial-level visibility, custody records, treatment evidence, financial reporting, and a documented final outcome where required.

The practical device lifecycle

Each stage produces information or control that the next stage depends on.

01Trigger

A refresh, offboarding, closure, surplus, lease event, or storage problem creates a population of devices that needs a decision.

02Scope

Identify owners, asset types, approximate counts, locations, condition, timing, existing records, and the customer’s success criteria.

03Collect

Plan custody, packaging, pickup, shipping, remote returns, and exception handling so assets can move without becoming untraceable.

04Control

Address data requirements and device-management constraints. Clarify MDM release, account or Activation Lock, wipe standards, evidence, and escalation paths.

05Inspect

Receive, inventory, test, and grade assets. The actual serial, model, specification, condition, and control status determine realistic routing and value.

06Route

Assign each asset an approved next outcome: internal reuse, resale or recovery, recycling, or another customer-approved treatment.

07Report

Return the agreed evidence: inventory results, treatment or exception records, financial settlement, and other approved documentation.

Disposition decisions

Outcome follows evidence

An AE should never assume that every device has resale value or that every device belongs in recycling. The condition and requirements determine the route.

Redeploy or reuse

Keep serviceable equipment in productive use when the customer’s policy, controls, and operational plan support it.

Resell or recover

Route marketable equipment toward value recovery after scope, ownership, data treatment, condition, and commercial terms are confirmed.

Recycle

Route equipment or components with no viable reuse path into an approved downstream process and document the outcome required by the customer.

Exception treatment

Escalate locked, damaged, missing, disputed, or policy-restricted assets instead of forcing them into a standard path.

Remember: retirement is the trigger, not the outcome. “Old equipment” is still a mixed population of data-bearing assets that requires evidence-based decisions.

02 · See it

Translate the process into buyer language

A useful explanation begins with the buyer’s physical situation and business consequence. It does not begin with an acronym.

Fictional example

Summit Creative

A 600-person company is refreshing part of its Mac fleet. Devices are in two offices and employee homes; some are still managed, and Finance wants to understand recoverable value.

What is really happening

  • The refresh creates a device-retirement trigger.
  • Distributed assets make collection and custody harder.
  • Management locks and data requirements can block the next outcome.
  • Value cannot be responsibly estimated from a rough device count alone.
  • IT, Security, Finance, and Operations need different evidence from the same process.

Build explanations at three depths

Use the same core truth at every length. Add detail only when it answers the buyer’s question.

30 seconds

Name the problem and outcome

Write one plain-language description for a first conversation.

Structure: physical problem → business consequence → Galide’s role → simple next step.

2 minutes

Explain the lifecycle

Cover trigger, scope, collection, control, inspection, routing, and reporting without feature-dumping.

Structure: why ITAD exists → how decisions are made → what evidence comes back.

10 minutes

Teach it through a scenario

Use a customer situation, adapt by stakeholder, answer questions, and identify what must be verified before a solution is promised.

Credibility comes from separating the customer’s facts, the standard process, and the service details that still require confirmation.

State the evidence, the working hypothesis, and which input would confirm the next step.

Complete a 10-minute stakeholder teach-back and a field assignment that includes an evidence-based lifecycle map. Both assessments must reach 80/100 with no critical miss.

Core terms
ITAD
The controlled process for moving technology out of active use and into an approved, documented next outcome.
Chain of custody
The record of who controlled an asset, where it moved, and when responsibility changed.
Data sanitization
A defined treatment intended to make data inaccessible, performed and evidenced according to the customer’s approved requirement.
MDM
Mobile device management used by an organization to configure and control devices. Enrollment or unreleased management can affect disposition.
Activation Lock
An Apple anti-theft control that may prevent reuse or resale until the authorized owner releases it.
Grading
Assessment of device identity, specification, functionality, cosmetic condition, and exceptions to support routing and value decisions.
Value recovery
The financial return that may remain after an asset’s condition, demand, requirements, and commercial terms are understood.
